    ACMA - Frequently Asked Questions

This article will cover the most frequently asked questions for ACMA verification.

    Sender IDs vs Own Number

Q: Can I register my own number as a Sender ID?

A: No, you cannot - this would prevent you from receiving replies.

Q: Do I need to register my own number with ACMA if I’m using it to send SMS in Reapit Sales?

A: Reapit Sales requires their agents (or an office number) to be verified with MessageMedia, our SMS provider, who in turn must ensure that this is compliant with ACMA rules. We prevent users from sending SMS via the Reapit Sales CRM system entirely if the number is not verified. Mobile numbers must be verified and then re-verified annually. This process is conducted entirely in-CRM.

Please note that this does NOT apply to Reapit Verify, which does require you to have a registered Sender ID.

Q: How does SMS from own number work in comparison to a Sender ID?

A: For SMS from own number, the recipient will see the incoming SMS as having come from that number and replies will go directly back to that number as if they had received an SMS from a friend - if the Agent has been added as a contact, for example, the recipient would see that contact's name when they get an SMS. If not, they just see the number.

Sender IDs are where you are using your business name as the sender, and DO NOT allow recipients to respond to those messages.

Q: For SMS that appear to come “from the agent”, what is the underlying mechanism?

A: "From the agent" SMS from Reapit Sales are verified annually via the CRM, which allows Agents/Offices to verify a number is actually their own, which is required before they can use a third party (Reapit Sales CRM) to send on their behalf "as them" - as in, from their full mobile number.

These messages allow agents to start a direct conversation via SMS with their clients that takes our systems out of the loop after the initial send. This verification is performed within the Reapit Sales CRM when a number is first enabled to send SMS and reminders begin one month prior to the annual verification running out.

Once a number is verified in these systems Agents/Offices can use the tools in the Reapit Sales CRM and Mobile app to send SMS as themselves with responses being sent directly to that number.

This process does not involve Sender ID and cannot involve sender ID as individual numbers can't be registered as a Sender ID and SMS sent under a Sender ID can't be replied to, which would defeat the purpose of send-as-self.

    General

Q: What is changing from 1 July 2026?

A: ACMA will require all Alphanumeric Sender IDs (the name shown as the SMS sender) to be formally registered and approved. Unregistered Sender IDs will appear as Unverified to recipients.

Q: Why is ACMA introducing mandatory Sender ID registration?

A: The changes are designed to reduce SMS spoofing and scams by ensuring only verified businesses can use branded Sender IDs.

Q: Do I need to register my Sender ID to keep sending SMS through Reapit?

A: Yes. Your Sender ID must be approved in ACMA Assist before Reapit can continue sending SMS on your behalf.

Q: What do I need to do to register my Sender ID?

A: Please let our Support team know, and they will submit your Sender ID to ACMA for approval.

Q: What if I don’t know who our agency's Authorised Business Representative ABR is?

A: You’ll need to check internally, typically with your legal, finance, or ownership team. Reapit cannot identify your ABR for you.

Q: Does this apply to SMS sent from our own mobile number?

A: No. The ACMA Sender ID registration requirement applies only to Alphanumeric Sender IDs, not SMS sent from your own number.

Q: How will I know when my Sender ID is ready for approval?

A: After Reapit submits your Sender ID, ACMA will email your ABR directly with a unique link to ACMA Assist. Your ABR must follow the instructions in ACMA Assist to confirm the application.

Q: Can Reapit set up ACMA Assist for us?

A: No. Only your ABR can set up ACMA Assist. Reapit cannot access or manage this on your behalf.

    Multiple agents / ABN structure

Q: We have multiple agents operating under the same ABN. Can you clarify how Sender ID registration works in this setup? Our residential and commercial teams operate under separate ABNs, with our Directors-in-Charge listed as the authorised representatives.

Does this mean SMS messages must be sent from those authorised representatives, or can individual agents continue sending SMS messages as they currently do under the registered Sender ID?

A: Agents can continue to send messages. Your agency's Authorised business Representative just needs to approve the Sender ID. Once that is done, the agent will continue to send messages as they always have.

Just keep in mind the Sender ID registration mainly impacts Lettings and PM clients. Sales clients will continue to send messages from the registered mobile number, unless they are using Reapit Verify, in which case, a Sender ID will be required.

Conjunction agents and agents without an ABN

Q: How does this process apply to conjunction agents who operate under their own ABN? Do they need to complete registration separately? Additionally, how should we handle agents who do not have their own ABN but still send SMS messages through our systems?

A: If the agents use systems provided by the agency then they don't need to worry about registering Sender IDs against their own ABN. The agency will approve the Sender ID for their systems and agents can continue to send SMS without any issues.

The only time an agent needs to register a Sender ID is if they use their own systems to send SMS. Something to keep in mind is in this scenario it is unlikely that they would be able to have a Sender ID similar to the agency name as their own business name registered against the ABN might not be similar to the agency's name.

This again sounds like a scenario more common in Sales where they just send from a registered mobile number meaning they don't have to worry about Sender ID registration.

    What happens next?

Q: Once our Sender ID is approved in ACMA Assist, are there any further steps required from our side? Do we need to provide confirmation or documentation to Reapit, or will this update automatically?

A: No further action is required from you. After Reapit submits your Sender ID application, ACMA will email your ABR directly. Your ABR simply needs to log in to ACMA Assist and approve the request. Once approved, the Sender ID is automatically registered in the ACMA system — there’s nothing you need to send back to Reapit.

    Sender IDs - General

Q: Can agents personalise or override the Sender ID, or is it system‑controlled?

A: Agents cannot override the Sender IDs it is set by our internal support team.

Q: What exactly will Reapit submit to ACMA on behalf of our agency?

A: We will submit the Sender IDs currently in use in the Reapit ecosystem, whether that be Reapit Sales, Reapit PM, Reapit Lettings Reapit Verify or Move Me In, along with some important information about your business.

Q: Will we be able to review and approve the Sender ID submission list prior to lodgement with ACMA?

A: Yes, you will just need to let our Support team know, and they will submit your new Sender ID to ACMA for approval.
